Filter cleaning
Pool filter cleaning in Austin
Filter cleaning in Austin is $150 a cleaning. Sullivan’s cleans cartridge, DE and sand filters by pressure, not by the calendar. We record the clean starting pressure and clean again when the gauge and the manufacturer’s instructions say it is due, so the filter is cleaned when it needs it. Each clean includes a check of the O-rings, clamps and gauge while the housing is open. Opening a pressurized filter is a job for qualified service.
Which one is on your pad?
-
Cartridge
Pleated cartridge elements; confirm the type from the equipment label.
Pleats opened and rinsed individually, not hosed as a block.
-
DE
Diatomaceous-earth filter media; the model identifies the recharge procedure.
Grids stripped, cleaned, and the correct charge weighed back in.
-
Sand
A filter-media bed; use the model label to identify its service instructions.
Backwashed and rinsed, with the media condition reported rather than assumed.

Cartridge, DE and sand filter cleaning
Cartridge elements are removed and rinsed individually. DE grids are stripped and cleaned, then recharged for the installed model. Sand filters use the appropriate backwash and rinse procedure. The filter label identifies the equipment; the shape of the tank alone does not tell you which procedure it needs.
Filter pressure, poor flow and cloudy pool water
Compare the pressure reading with the clean baseline at the same pump speed, using the installed filter’s manual. Pressure, circulation and water readings need to be considered together. A cloudy pool may need water balancing or equipment diagnosis as well as cleaning. Leave opening a pressurized filter to qualified service.

How do I know when my pool filter needs cleaning?
Compare the pressure with the recorded clean baseline at the same pump speed and follow your filter’s manual. Pentair’s Clean & Clear Plus guide calls for cleaning at approximately 10 psi above the original pressure or a significant flow reduction. That model-specific instruction is not a replacement for the manual on a different filter.

What is the difference between a cartridge, DE and sand filter?
The filtering material and service procedure differ. Cartridges use pleated elements; DE filters use a coating of diatomaceous earth; sand filters use a media bed. Cleaning and recharge procedures depend on the model. Identify the filter by its label, not the tank’s shape, and leave opening a pressurized system to qualified service.

Can a dirty filter make a pool cloudy?
It can. A clogged filter is one cause of cloudy water, alongside low chlorine and poor circulation, so we check the filter pressure and the water readings together to find which it is. Clear water alone does not prove it is safe to swim.

Is filter cleaning included in weekly pool service?
No. Filter cleaning is a separate job at $150 a cleaning. Each weekly visit reads the filter pressure against its clean baseline, which is how you know when a cleaning is due.
These are the questions about pool filter cleaning. Every question we are asked often is answered across the whole site.
