Why Austin pool water behaves the way it does

Austin pools scale because the fill water is hard and the summer is long. The city's supply is surface water drawn from the Colorado River through the Highland Lakes — limestone country — so calcium arrives dissolved in every gallon you add. Evaporation then removes the water and leaves the calcium, so hardness climbs all summer. Understanding that one mechanism explains most of what goes wrong with pools here.

The mechanism, in one paragraph

Water evaporates. Calcium does not. Every time a pool loses an inch to a hot afternoon and you top it up from the hose, you add calcium and remove none. Over a summer that arithmetic is relentless, and it is why a pool that was perfectly balanced in April can be depositing scale on the tile by August without anyone changing anything.

The reason it bites harder in Austin than in, say, Houston is the source. Austin Water draws from the Highland Lakes and treats it at the Ullrich, Davis and Handcox plants; that water has run over and through limestone for its entire journey. The city publishes its water quality reports , and it is worth knowing that published third-party figures for Austin's hardness vary widely — which is exactly why the useful move is to test your own fill water from your own hose rather than trust a number off a website, including this one.

What the readings should be

Target ranges are the industry-standard operating ranges used across the trade. Your pool's correct targets depend on its surface and its equipment — a pool with a salt cell and one with a tile waterline do not want identical numbers.

The two readings that only go up

Calcium hardness and cyanuric acid are different from everything else on that table. Chlorine burns off, pH swings both ways, alkalinity can be raised and lowered. Those two accumulate, and the only thing that reduces either is replacing some of the water.

That is worth internalising because it changes how you read a test. A pool with cyanuric acid at 120 ppm does not have a chlorine problem that more chlorine will fix — it has water that needs partially replacing. Adding more stabilized chlorine to it makes next month worse.

Where you live changes what goes wrong

The fill water is the same across our whole service area, but the ground is not. West of the Balcones Escarpment — West Lake Hills, River Place and Northwest Hills — pools sit on Edwards limestone with thin soil, steep lots and heavy live-oak and Ashe juniper drop from December through April. East of it — East Austin and North Austin — pools sit on Blackland Prairie clay that swells and shrinks with the season, moving coping, decking and buried plumbing with it.

So a slow water loss means different things in different neighborhoods. On limestone it is usually evaporation or a fitting. On clay it is worth investigating properly before you spend a summer topping it up.

Salt pools are still chlorine pools

A salt chlorine generator makes chlorine from salt rather than you carrying it in. It is gentler on skin and eyes and much easier to keep steady — but it raises pH continuously as a by-product, so a salt pool needs acid and attention rather than none at all. Salt is also corrosive to some stone and metal, which is a real consideration on the limestone coping that is common west of MoPac.

What to do about all of this

  • Test the water from your own hose once, so you know what you are actually adding when you top up.
  • Watch calcium hardness across the summer rather than checking it once. The trend is the information; a single reading is not.
  • Keep pH at the low end of its range through the hot months. That is the lever that decides whether dissolved calcium stays dissolved.
  • Plan a partial water replacement rather than being forced into one. It is a cheaper job when it is scheduled.
  • If the tile has already gone rough, that is calcium deposit and it does not brush off. It needs bead blasting, and it will come back unless the chemistry changes.

What is the Langelier Saturation Index and why does it matter more than individual readings?

It combines pH, temperature, calcium hardness, alkalinity and dissolved solids into a single number describing whether the water wants to deposit calcium or dissolve it. It matters because the individual readings can all sit inside their normal ranges while the combination is still aggressive or still scaling — a pool at pH 7.8 with high calcium and 90°F water is scaling even though nothing on the test strip looks alarming.

Does my pool need draining, and is that safe in Austin?

Partial replacement is the only way to reduce cyanuric acid or calcium hardness, so eventually most Austin pools need some. Doing it safely matters here: after heavy rain the ground water table can be high enough that an empty shell will float, and on the Blackland clay east of the escarpment the surrounding soil moves as well. Drain partially, drain when the ground is dry, and never leave the shell empty.

Do I need to test the water myself if I have weekly service?

Not routinely — that is what you are paying for. It is worth testing after three things: a heavy rain, a party, and any week the pump was off. Those are the events that outrun a weekly schedule, and catching them early is the difference between a dose of chlorine and a recovery job.
